Tranmere youngsters edged out of cup on spot-kicks

ROVERS’ youngsters went home with their heads held high after going out of the FA Youth Cup in a penalty shoot-out defeat to Cardiff.

The fourth round tie was still scoreless after extra time at Ninian Park last night.

The home side, drawn from Cardiff’s Academy set-up, then won the shoot-out 5-4 after each team had taken seven penalty-kicks.

Rovers coach Shaun Garnett said: “I could not have asked for any more from the lads. They played well, pushed forward and created good scoring opportunities which they did not take. It was one of those nights when nothing was going to go for us. I thought they deserved to win the game and I was very proud of them.”
