Music lovers try to keep indie alive in Ellesmere Port

FOUR music-loving friends are bringing indie music back to the town in a bid to uncover the region’s next big band.

Shaun Price, Mike Bladen, James Guthrie and John Russel, all from Ellesmere Port, aim to bring new blood to the indie scene and give up-and-coming bands the chance to become as big as Oasis or The Coral.

The lads are launching a monthly indie night tomorrow at Destiny and Elite nightclub at The Coloseum under the slogan “Saving indie one Thursday at a time”.

Headlining are Wigan band Boomin, who have been described by Rock FM as the best unsigned band, with support from Chester’s own Bayrun Junkies.

The four pals each have a share in Floorfiller DJs, an entertainment company they set up last year to produce events like this as well as offer DJ services for private parties and functions.

West Cheshire College student Mike Bladen, 19, who is DJ on the night, said: “This is a tremendous chance to see the nation’s next big things on their route to the top.

“There are a lot of people going to the launch night because there is nowhere else doing indie music.

“It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a while, it’s purely for the enjoyment of indie music.

“Me and Shaun went to watch Boomin in Wigan recently and we said they were the band for us. So we approached them to see if they would come down for the launch night and we’re delighted they agreed.”

The indie night will take place at Destiny & Elite on the last Thursday of every month. Entry to tomorrow’s (Thursday) launch night is £3.
